TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR joins as Global Team Ambassador

(15 September 2009)

Football Club in the English Premier League, Tottenham Hotspur officially became Team Ambassador for Special Olympics Global Football when the announcement was made to the public prior to a game against Manchester United on 12 September.

Special Olympics Global Football (SOGF) is an initiative created to identify and support new opportunities for grass-roots participation, public promotion and fundraising linked to the world’s most popular sport: football.

“Thought the work of the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation, the Club has established a great relationship with Special Olympics.  I am delighted that the Club has become a Global Team Ambassador,” said Daniel Levy, Chairman of Tottenham Hotspur.

There are 300,000 registered Special Olympics football players worldwide and the aim is to bring that number closer to 500,000 by involving Tottenham Hotspur.  Special Olympics Global Football aims to create a network of 10 teams by the end of 2010, which will bring the football community together to promote inclusion and raise the profile of Special Olympics.

Using their worldwide appeal, Global Team Ambassadors promote inclusion in sport and raise the profile of Special Olympics. Within this role, Tottenham Hotspur will use the power of football to involve supporters, coaches and partners as part of the promotion of inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities in sport.  Among others, Team Ambassadors for Special Olympics currently include Inter Milan and Corinthians Football Clubs.

The relationship will also see the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation continue to support Special Olympics within its current role as the official Grassroots Football Provider, which has seen the Foundation deliver coaching clinics for Special Olympics athletes in the UK, in China, and throughout Europe.
