Over 1,000 Special Olympics athletes from Poland and other four European countries competed in the IX Special Olympics Poland National Games that were held in the central Polish city of Kielce from 2-5 July 2009.
Guest teams were from Sweden, Hungary, Turkey and Russia while Polish teams came from 17 regions. Teams were hosted in seven cities in the Swietokrzyskie Region (Kielce, Jedrzejow, Suchedniow, Ostrowiec Swietokrzyski, Miedziana Gora, Nowiny and Skarzysko-Kamienna).
Over 5,000 spectators enjoyed Opening Ceremonies on 2 July which was held in an Kadzielnia Amphitheatre. Guests included representatives from parliament, the mayor’s office, and the region as well as sponsors. The First Lady of Poland, Mrs. Maria Kaczynska, who was the patron of the Games, sent a letter of congratulations, that was read by a representative from her office.
The Flame of Hope was brought into the amphitheatre by approximately 40 law enforcement officers who had run through the region and city.
The audience was delighted with the entertainment included the popular sound of singer Andrzej Piaseczny and the visual grace and beauty of the Kielecki Theater and Dance troupe.
During the Games, the Young Athletes initiative was presented for the first time. The play-focused initiative introduces young children, ages 2-7, to sports and shows parents, caregivers and schools the benefits of Special Olympics.
Healthy Athletes screenings in all six disciplines were held (see separate story).
Over 50 families participated in the Games and took part in many activities, including a Family Forum that was held on 5 July. They also joined athletes at Olympic Town and on special tours and picnics.
Media coverage was excellent with the Games generating a lot of interest for local, regional and national television and radio broadcasters and newspapers.
Observers commented on the outstanding cooperation between the Games Organizing Committee and the Special Olympics National Office which they said greatly contributed to the success of the Games. It was also considered an excellent indication to what can be expected during the Special Olympics European Games that will be held in Warsaw from 18-23 September, 2010.
