SERBIA: Unified concept presented at Sport for Development conference

(29 April 2009)

The British Council Serbia organized a one-day conference on “Sport for Development” on 24 March 2009 in Belgrade. The event was organized together with UNICEF in Serbia.
Speakers came from the UK, Turkey, Switzerland and Israel and there were over 140 participants from Serbia. Participants included policy makers and practitioners from a wide range of sports related fields: education, youth workers, media, sports clubs, sports associations, the Ministry of Youth and Sport and Ministry of Education.
The aim of the conference was to share best practice, create cross-border institutional and individual links and influence policy decisions. The conference highlighted the work of organizations in harnessing the power of sport for social change and development.
Special Olympics Serbia was represented by National Director Aleksandar Stanojevic, who gave a presentation on Youth Unified Sports in the breakout session “Social Mobilization/Sport as an instrument for inclusion.”
The British Council is the United Kingdom’s international organization for educational opportunities and cultural relations.  The Council runs projects in education, arts, science, sport, governance and the English language.
