2009 Special Olympics European Football Week

(25 April 2009 - 3 May 2009 )

The ninth annual Special Olympics European Football Week will be held 25 April-3 May, 2009. The aim of the event, which this year will on inclusion and coach recruitment, is to bring players with and without intellectual disabilities together on and off the playing field.

During a week over 50,000 football players with intellectual disabilities from 50 countries are expected to take part in a wide range of football  activities, which lead to more awareness about and acceptance.
The priorities of Special Olympics European Football Week are to:
1.      Further develop Youth and Unified Football - bringing players
with and without intellectual disabilities  together on the football pitch;
2.      Further develop partnerships with national football
associations and clubs;
3.      Increase number of local competitions to enable more athletes to compete, as critical part of the Special Olympics strategy to improve the athlete experience and as an effective way to involve the community in Special Olympics, from local authorities to a local club;
4.      Engage new stakeholders (schools, authorities, sponsors, other NGOs, etc) in Football Week.
